Grey’s Anatomy is a primetime televison medical drama which
won a Golden Globe.
Can another medical drama series enchain you after E.R.,
Chicago Hope, House or Scrubs kept you breathless? Whether its episodes make
you cry, involve saving patients’ lives or are islanded with screamingly funny
moments, Grey’s Anatomy brings something new and can be “as complicated as any
neurosurgery”. In an avalanche of catchy coincidences, we get to meet the five
surgical interns, later residents and their mentors who work at Seattle Grace
Hospital in Seattle, Washington.
It debuted on ABC on 27 March 05, right after the Desperate
Housewives.
Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Isobel “Izzie” Stevens
(Katherine Heigl), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), George O’Malley (T. R. Knight)
and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) begin the series as interns, progressing to
residency after their first year in the surgical program. Initially, they are
mentored by Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who is considered the toughest
resident of the hospital. The surgical program is run by Chief of Surgery
Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.), in whose employ are attending physicians
Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), who specializes in neurosurgery, and Preston
Burke (Isaiah Washington), who specializes in cardiothoracic surgery. At first,
Meredith lives alone in her mother’s house avoiding as possible to complicate
her life and trying to keep herself aloof both from her colleagues and bosses.
Her childhood traumas have their say on the way she acts. Izzie is a beautiful
woman who decided to pull herself up by her own bootstraps. An intern emulative
of perfection, Cristina leaves the impression that she never heard about
emotions… about compassion. While George can be seen as a big brother whom
girls can unburden their sorrows, Alex is a Casanova.
The show features an ensemble cast, though Meredith is
featured as the central character, providing voice-over narration at the
beginning and end of most episodes. The title of the show is an allusion to the
anatomy textbook Gray’s Anatomy, and play on the central character’s (Meredith
Grey’s) name.
